First HDOD F3 Potted up
Finally time for moving up in the world, potted up several tomatoes for test purposes. High tunnel hit 100+ with the door open and a fan running, many plants loved the warmth. Today's big projects were starting all of our micro tomato and micro/dwarf pepper seeds to grow this summer(maybe a bit late on peppers). The second big project of the day was selecting 3 of the best looking HDOD crosses to pot up into ten gallon containers to grow out through the season.
Plants were inspected and it looks very promising to have a wide variety of genetics to play with crossing tomatoes this summer. A few standouts are looking great that I am excited to make crosses with including: Phils one, Phils two, Stick, and several elongated tomatoes. I have a curiosity that the genetics for elongation crossed into some large tomatoes could give some hefty sizes later on in the crosses. A few exciting ones for elongated tomatoes that will be tested are buritino, fertility stick, emalia, and ice cream suppositories. These varieties were selected for color(green/red striping, orange, and yellow/cream) along with longer shaped fruit. Offspring will truly be peculiar.
For each of the HDOD colors three plants were chosen, all five plants looked fantastic with shorter growth than the full size counter parts and also a very thick stem in comparison. With these traits I feel Confident they will remain compact.
From experience any plant that is dwarf and self pollinated, the offspring will be dwarf 100% of the time unless there is the third hidden micro gene. While these are dwarf there is a wide range of sizes but these were all on the lowest end when grown in a one gallon container indoors. All three selections were compact with a uniform look, topping out in the 15-18 inch range. Included are photos of them at roughly 4-5 weeks since seeding planted into the forever 10 gallon home.
Fruiting colors for Orange will stay orange, yellow selections could stay yellow or turn orange, the red selection will be the most variation and could be any color. With these recessive traits still being able to appear we can have some better orange and yellow selections appear from the red selections to move forward to the F4 stage.
Photos were taken at night after planting, these plants look much more stout in person as well. Excited to see the path these selections take.
